Get the Look: Bridgit Mendler

When you become a mother, many things in your life change. One thing that changed for me is the television programming that I watch. And recently, I find myself really invested in the shows on the Disney Channel. One thing that I have noticed while watching the shows is that the wardrobe for many of the tween/teen characters is actually really fabulous! I would love to meet whoever the stylists are.

In particular, Bridgit Mendler, who plays Teddy Duncan on the show Good Luck Charlie always looks amazing. And in fact, Mendler herself started a fashion line with Target that was inspired by her onscreen character. The actress-cum-singer/songwriter has (at least so far) done what many young women in entertainment struggle to do: maintain a wholesome yet stylish appearance that is both modest and sexy.

In this look, she sports a simple tee with some skinny jeans and adds a hint of sex appeal with those amazingly fun heels. She adds a touch of bling with the bangle bracelets and her loose braided locks and smoky eye makeup add an extra dose of sexy without being over the top.

Spring 2014 Party Dresses

The holiday rush is finally over, but that doesn't mean that throwing parties is. There are still plenty of reasons to celebrate- birthdays, job promotions, anniversaries and dressing up just because. And with spring officially beginning this week (yay!), it's time to break out the spring party dresses.

Whether your style is modest and classy or funky and fun, you can add some Australian flair from SHOWPO to your party wardrobe with this great selection of SHOWPO party dresses. The company has a wide selection of fashion pieces and here are some of my favorites for spring.

Mandy Dress
For those of you fashionistas who need something to wear to a formal dinner party or a wedding, the Mandy dress from SHOWPO is a great choice. The soft baby pink, along with the black lace makes it an elegant, classy piece to celebrate special occasions this spring.

Femme Fatale Dress
Femme Fatale Dress Back
For a more casual event or a romantic night out, I love this Femme Fatale dress in red. The front shows a simple v-neck top with a pleated style skirt and the back has an unsuspecting heart cut out.

Night Fever Dress
I am really digging this Night Fever Dress. I love the shift style, combined with the black mesh top and the gold sequins. This would be a fun dress to wear on a girl's night out, or to a concert. The simple design, plus the sparkling sequins makes it such a fun party dress!

Armoured in Purple Dress
For a night out dancing or bar hopping, this sexy Armoured in Purple Dress is fabulous. I love the bright spring color, and the cut out design at the bust is sexy, yet mysterious.

Luck of the Irish

I have a little bit of Irish in me, but not enough to make a big deal out of it. However, I still always wear green on St. Patrick's Day because I don't like getting pinched! But also, I love green. It's the color of money, ya know. :)

So in the spirit of Ireland and Lucky Charms (yummy!), here are some fabulous green pieces to add to your spring wardrobe, if you are running low on green.

The Sak - Bracelet, Gold-Tone Signature Chevron Hunter Green Leather BraceletMarc Fisher - Perfection Boxy Satchel

Leather cuffs with embellishments are big this season, so this cuff is a great choice to add to your jewelry/accessories collection. This handbag is a great everyday piece that adds a fun punch of color to your look.

Michael Michael Kors - Multirib Polo SweaterNumph - New Vivienne Blazer

This simple green shirt with subtle stripes is a great everyday piece that you can wear with jeans or a skirt, and the double print jacket is fun and unique! I love the stripes & polka dots combo. This is a versatile choice that you can wear to work or for a day out with the ladies.
Louise Et Cie - 'Naxos' Flat
Simple but with a touch of gold, this shoe is practical and stylish. I like that it is a flat but also has a small heel. You can wear it with jeans or dresses, and it is great for St. Patty's Day and beyond.

Lauren Ralph Lauren - Leather Pencil Skirt

I absolutely love this green leather skirt! The neon color is hot this season and so is leather, so it's a win win piece. Dress it up with some pumps, or dress it down with some flats. Great for a day at the office or a date night out.

Designer Spotlight: bird+beau

I had a serendipitous moment recently, discovering that a friend of a friend is an awesome, independent jewelry designer. Kristin Austin is the creative force behind the brand bird+beau, and I asked her to tell me more about her story, her design inspiration and her hopes for the future.

L&L: What got you started in jewelry making?
B+B: I've made jewelry for as long as I can remember.  I used to make it for myself or as gifts until people started telling me I should sell it.  That was years ago, before Etsy was around, so I put a few items on Ebay, in local shops, and I did a few shows.  I enrolled in metalsmithing at school and worked a part time job at a bead store alongside a goldsmith and my passion for jewelry went from there.

L&L: How did you come up with the name bird+beau?
B+B: The name bird+beau was inspired by my reason, me + my fella - and to save money for our wedding day, for our future.  It kind of just came to me one day, driving to work actually, and I knew it was a good one and perfect for what I wanted to do.  It was sweet and meaningful, and I thought it would apply well to how I envision my brand growing - to include small wedding day details for other birds and beaus!

L&L: Where does your design inspiration come from?
B+B: I am all over the place with my interests - I love modern design, but I have a sweet spot for vintage stuff too.  I like girly things and simple things and nature and geometric shapes and color and texture and the list goes on.  Most recently, I have been creating a lot of faceted pieces, like in my POP collection, and modern geometrical flowery designs cut from brass.  I'm liking those a lot.

L&L: What are your long term plans for your business?
B+B: My long term plans for bird+beau include handcrafted wedding day details. I love making jewelry and I am hoping to get my torch set back up this spring, so that will take my jewelry to a new level. I also hope to start incorporating more accessories- wedding day and every day. Good things are sure to come!

L&L: Where can people find your jewelry?
B+B: Currently, anyone can shop for my handmade wares online at  I have a calendar of events on my site that I keep updated, which includes shows mostly around Raleigh, but I have one coming up at the end of the month in Wilmington. Also, a great friend of mine has been wonderfully nudging me to get my wholesale pricing together, so I am working on that and hope to pitch to a few boutiques within the next couple of months.

Be sure to visit the bird+beau website to check out the entire collection of Kristin's jewelry! Also check out bird+beau on social media:

Academy Awards 2014

Last night I watched the Academy Awards solely to see how Hollywood rocked it in the style world this year. I have to say, I was a bit disappointed. This year I was expecting some colorful, fun ensembles and I did not see much of that. Nonetheless, I have narrowed down my favorites of the night, for both the guys and the girls.

#1 Girl-  Kelly Osbourne
Photo: Steve Granitz/WireImage
Even I am surprised that Kelly Osbourne topped my list, surpassing Julia Roberts, Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett. But she stood out with her gorgeous, form fitting dress. Yes, it is simple, but the touch of shimmer in her lace shrug adds an elegance to the look that intertwines beautifully with her (though unconventional) lavender locks.

Honorable mention ladies-

Charlize Theron

Charlize, although donned in plain black, was classy and chic in her gown. The strapless, plunging neckline can be hard to pull off but this sexy lady does it with confidence. The dress, much like Kelly O's, brings attention to the starlet, but does so in a simple, nonchalant way.

Kate Hudson
Photo: Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP
Kate Hudson, like me, doesn't have the "blossoming bosom" gene. But she found a dress this year that drew the attention to her enviable waistline. The cinch style of her sparkling dress is unique and gorgeous. She looks modest with some mystery, but shows just enough skin to exude a sexy, feminine vibe.

Viola Davis
Photo: Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP
I don't necessarily think that Viola's dress is the most flattering on her body, but she gets points for taking the road less traveled with her colorful green piece. The color does compliment her skin tone beautifully, and the simple silhouette is both classy and fun.

#1 Guy- Ethan Hawke
Photo: Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP
When it comes to men's fashion, sometimes less is more. In the case of last night's Oscars, Ethan Hawke proved this. Most men's tuxedos look exactly the same, but part of what makes a man look good is the way he wears his clothes. Ethan was my top pick because he was simple, classy and confident.

Honorable mention guys-

Tyler Perry
Photo: Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP
Tyler Perry, while also very classic in his ensemble choice, did a nice pop of white with his tux. That small element set him apart without making him stand out in a bad way. His look was timeless and unique, and he topped it off with a humble confidence that was the cherry on top.

 Michael Strahan
Photo: Jeff Vespa/WireImage
Michael, much like Viola Davis, gets props not because of the way his getup fits him, but because he took a risk in red. He wears it with no apology and I love that he did something different. Since we are technically still in winter, he also gets points for staying in color seasonally (although that only works when you can pull it off).

Who topped your best dressed list?
