5 Fashion Rules to Break NOW

We've all heard of them. Those fashion "rules" that many consider a faux pas to break. However, most of these rules are not rules at all- they are merely suggestions, born from a fear of standing out and making a bold fashion statement. So if you're ready to brave up and break some rules of fashion, here are 5 fashion rules to break now.

Don't Wear White After Labor Day
If you Google "why can't you wear white after Labor Day?" you will find a lot of theories, but no definitive answer. That's because this rule was created so long ago, and for outdated reasons, that nobody really tries to find its origin. People think it is an important rule to follow, but don't even know why. So...wear white whenever you want! One great way to add some fun to a white ensemble is by adding pops of color with other pieces.

Don't Wear Socks With Sandals
This rule I mostly agree with, however it applies more to men than to women. And it really depends on two things: the sock style, and the shoe style. One way it's totally fine to break this rule is by wearing cute ankle socks with a dressy sandal or heels. However, don't try the "socks and birkenstocks" look. That combo does not do anyone a favor.

Don't Mix Prints
When done properly, mixing prints can create really fun and fashionable looks. Don't be afraid to stand out and mix things up! You still want a visually cohesive look, but one with some boldness. The basic rule of thumb is to keep the prints in the same color palette and focus on just one or two common colors. It's fine to mix prints, but don't overdo it!

Don't Wear More Than One Necklace
Doubling up on necklaces has been a hot trend this year, and I don't see it slowing down anytime soon. The key to creating a polished look with more than one necklace is to wear ones that are different lengths and don't overlap the design of the others. Also, if you choose to wear a chunkier style, limit it to one, adding thinner pieces to balance it out. While wearing more than one necklace is fine, limit it to three necklaces total.

Don't Mix Textures
As with mixing prints, mixing different fabrics is something that can look totally chic when put together well. Whether it is leather, lace, corduroy or denim, combining textures for an ensemble is a great way to add dimension and depth to an outfit. Don't wear more than three different fabrics for one look, and keep the accessories to a minimum.
